Figured this was a better place to ask but @npub1764…nuj0, with the move to the ActivityPub API (I've been looking and reading over https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-api and looking to see how I can incorporate this in https://divine.video), how do you think this'll fare with existing clients that lean heavy into the Mastodon API?

yeah, this is how abuse get amplified: when "anti-cenorship" logics (aka maximum reach) is placed over the actual safety of folks - which includes things like blocking.
The journalist in question in that article would be the type I would block. Also bridging works when you keep it under 200 characters. And Mastodon *literally* has had the big node problem since before ATProto came on the scene.

The leadership of the Democrats only see all of this as a marketing ploy for 2028. If they even attempt to insulate what damage the radical Republicans are doing.

The concept of an invasion of Canada is unfathomable. And it's so much easier to hold that as an emergency (because of its position). This energy isn't held for Puerto Rico (which, if it was folded deeper into the US, it would become even more repressive for PRians in favor of American hegemony). Just ask the other non-white-led countries that the United States has conquered.

Nah ChatGPT is a brain flattener. If you take it as is, as most people will (we've conditioned people to ignore terms and conditions, why the fuck do tech people think that the phrase "experimental" means anything if you put it everywhere??), it and other AI chat tools will defend white supremacy to the T.
Grok is an extremely poignant example of this because it's incapable of understanding discrimination and Gemini operates just like Google Photos: it'll come right up to the nose and ignore research around misogynior (in hopes of keeping the more "conservative" userbase and alienating those who feel forced to stay with Google).
The more folks keep digging their wheels in advocacy of LLM tech, the more they need to own that this shit is a collective cognitive failure.

It took nearly a decade to make this map. I'm definitely getting this. https://decolonialatlas.wordpress.com/turtle-island-decolonized/
> Nearly 300 names are compiled here, representing about 150 languages. Some names are from the precolonial era, while others are not quite as old, and in certain cases where the original name has been lost, Indigenous collaborators reconstructed names based on their cultural relationship with that location. Because Indigenous languages are living and dynamic, none of these names are any less “authentic” than others.

Seeing more and more reports from small and medium publications of being overwhelmed by LLM generated submissions, this time from Uncanny Magazine. I hope that the stuff I create never gets infested or ingested into those models but what is consent to technology?
Henrietta Lacks, Tuskegee and perhaps dozens (if not hundreds) of other people who've been forcibly conscripted to the whims of "technological advancement". It's digital manifest destiny at this point. Instead of a Christian God, it's the forceful hand of business.
It's hard to tell the difference at times.

2024-10-11 22:45:07 UTC

Microsoft is actually fucked. There's no concrete way to shift its investments without a heavy shift in society. It's doing what IBM did, attempting to solve the world's problems with technology with extreme ignorance to the problem root.
For example, modern police technology all have history from the apartheid technology IBM they developed some time ago. Then they got a sitting president to invest in an initiative to digitize a lot of the policies around policing. Not to improve it, but to *automate* it. Kansas City was a test bed (whose police chief ended up working for the FBI to expand this technology).
It took about four years for it to be deployed in every state. And that was in the late 1970s (re: deployment). Microsoft stepped in to expand it for federal and international military use, both expansion of the anti-Black police state (that was the OG data used, the literal racist fears of affluent white people), IBM refined it when things like America's failure to take over Vietnam happened.
Like all of this has to go. It's not even a rotten apple, the whole orchard is laced with Nightshade-infused apples.

Black Software should have been named "African American Software". Outside of the one mention of a Nigerian person who made AfroNet (who was a first-generation Nigerian American, I was excited for a moment because I was hoping for mentions of folks _outside_ of the US), this book seems to only take place in the United States. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Software
I think that's part of the nature of this. ARPANet was a United States government project. IBM, despite its own ... colonial background .. is an American multinational. The languages and documentation were also targeting American English.
This makes it hard to _not see_ how the Internet and computing helped "push" American ideologies of technology across the world (despite everyone else clamping their approaches on top of it).

2024-10-06 14:22:44 UTC

"Jacky, how is that you 'make' everything political?"
I don't "make" something political. Politics isn't a box, the words someone speaks or just some whim. It's the relationship of power that controls the relationships between *everything*.
Like who can use a bathroom. Who has the right to have water or have a path to wealth. Who can enjoy "creature comforts". And who can participate in understanding politics and those who can complain about it "ruining" everything.
[This is one of the reasons why I do not understand the 'CW your political post' nor will I ever: it's effectively choosing to opt out of life. And if you have the luxury, I'm not the person you want to follow or see! I can't wash away my Blackness. Coming out completely would destroy a lot of existing relationships I have. And falling in line with the normative (read: conservative) nature of people will do nothing but repress myself in ways I fought not to over a decade.]

2024-10-05 17:52:25 UTC

It's fun to read in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Software that even in Usenet times, Black people were not allowed to just *talk about being Black* and always had to be policed online.

I don't talk too much about what happened after the Google Photos to my friend because it's no different from digital violence. But it's something that *shouldn't* have to be discussed in order to give people paused. Two journalists asked me. I've worked for three years to keep her identity hidden (deleting her name and referencing online). Her having to switch colleges all because I put a fucking photo online that the company still refuses to take any concrete accountability about.
Some of my frustration is definitely personal. And since tech is personal, it's been very hard to watch people who defend this stuff because of "convenience". The way tech has disconnected people from empathy is so frustrating and so American, I sometimes regret even saying shit. It's not like Google would even do anything (the G+ head was the only one from the company who reached out).

There's going to be the bootlicker/apologist who thinks it's good and that people should pay a fare. But if the funds used to pay the people more than doubly exceed the cost of free fares, you're ignoring logic for state violence aplologa. Which is what leads people to get harmed.

The fact of the matter is that if you have no qualms or inkling to even try to figure out what can be done about this, there's nothing that can move you. And it's sad because this is one of the _many_ things that this administration - this country - is enabling.
The methods used here (remote militarization of a power for oppression) is used in the other client states that the United States has its tendrils in (this is what neocolonialism is). This is what American patriotism looks like; straight up apathy but alleged calls for unity around political entities that provide you with mental cotton candy.

Africans were fighting colonizers in Haiti for dignity. A fight that weakened a European country enough to sell its claim to land in Turtle Island (The Louisiana Purchase).
The first bell of many.

The courts did something good today.

"Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly," Judge Amit Mehta wrote in a 286-page hearing.
If the deals get rolled back; that's $26 billion of deals that they'd lose. PLEASE LET THIS RESULT IN A BREAKING UP OF THE COMPANY.

The Internet has no real concept of consent. It goes too roughly against so many business models. Reading Google's inaugural white paper on search and advertising, that was their effective declaration.
Now we have app stores that make money on re-boosting apps filled to the brim with ads, a known vector of malware and resource drain. A Web that "relies on it" because companies fight so hard against municipal and communal Internet resources. And the foot soldiers (unknowingly or not) whose identities and stability rely on this digital abuse.

If you're into following #labor and unions in the United States, I'd recommend subscribing to @npub1qj6…uwu7's magazine over at https://labornotes.org/store/labor-notes-subscription. I renewed mines at their conference this year and I'm reading https://labornotes.org/2024/07/new-battery-belt-changing-south about the green capitalism rush around cars. It does freak me out that all of this money (billions!) isn't going to be used on improving transit in the South but instead crack out hundreds of thousands of cars to "replace" the general market of cars.
What happens to all of these ICE machines? Do we just export them to the global South like we do with everything else and increase pollution?
> “We want to contain China, even if it comes at the expense of addressing the world’s climate change crisis,” Stephen Roach, the former chair of Morgan Stanley Asia, told Axios in July
That is what's driving the EV rush. It's not for the benefit of the planet or people, but the pockets of a few very at the cost of the South. And we know who lives there.

One day, we'll get into national sports as a form of body fascism, how it reinforces jingoistic tendencies, warps inclusion through tactics mirrored by the military and has reduced the joy of sports into something that mirrors the nature of the Roman gladiators (one of the reasons why American sports like football and basketball are keen to use Black bodies but rarely respect them enough to keep them alive when no longer valuable, like football and concussions).

I mean nothing is going to beat the Apple battery performance (due to closed knowledge and hyper optimization of the device and software integration).
That aside, I had that combo and my framework held up around 5 hrs on power saver performance mode nonstop once (I remember because I was connecting to it remotely from my macbook). That was on Debian GNOME
