Short version:
ⓐ progress in math ≡ progress in human understanding (NOT problem solving);
ⓑ such progress can only be brought by asking interesting questions;
ⓒ such questions can only be found by (human) learning a problem, thinking hard and ideally getting stuck;

So, IBM publishes machine-generated translations of AIX documentation on its Web site, and the French translation of awk documentation translated “sin” and “log” (the math functions) as if they were the words for a religious transgression and a journal respectively. 🤣

Here's a mathematical fact which I find amazingly counter-intuitive:
There exists a polytope (=the convex hull of a finite set) in ℝ⁴ which is not combinatorially equivalent to one with rational vertex coordinates (=the convex hull of a finite subset of ℚ⁴)!

This almost-but-not-quite-periodic image is inspired by a recent blog post by @johncarlosbaez.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy about musical scales: let me explain what I drew here, and what it has to do with music, but also with diophantine approximations of log(2), log(3) and log(5). 🧵⤵️ •1/19

… also: why are so many videos and essays and popular science stuff dedicated to trying to explain the philosophy and intuitive ideas of the FIRST quantization, and absolutely NONE about this completely mind-boggling fact that FOR SOME REASON WE NEED TO DO IT A SECOND TIME? •15/16

To caricature slightly (but only slightly): because the formal scientific publication process is used to evaluate researchers, it needs to be tightly guarded, and because of this, researchers who actually need to communicate between themselves …

PS: if you need help visualizing the the 3-sphere, maybe the videos www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBot... and www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPUd... can help (they show what it's like to navigate a 120-cell, resp. 600-cell, which is a tiling of the 3-sphere by regular dodecahedra, resp. tetrahedra).

‣ QUESTION: Do you think the Möbius curve stands out among the five? Is there some visual property that makes it different from the four control curves? If I had shown all five to you, would you have said the Möbius one is somehow special? If so, can you describe what? Or is it just like the others?

N'oubliez pas: l'hexadécimal B6 se prononce «dizante-seize» sauf chez les Belges où c'est «onzante-six».

Note: I'm not saying music-generating AIs don't exist. I know they do. But as far as I'm aware, there's no public Web site where you type “a piano sonata in the style of Beethoven, quoting Elgar's ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ marches in every movement” and you get a shitty mp3 to download.

When you hear “Internet of Things” or “connected”, think:
①useless & works badly at best,
②requires constant updates and Internet access for no reason,
③ceases to work because company decides to stop maintaining,
④gets hacked and serves to attack you/others,
⑤keeps you under constant surveillance.

I asked a long question on MathOverflow about this game, with detailed explanations and some remarks and comments: mathoverflow.net/q/503195/17064
(Since it's about mathematical games and computability, I think @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social might be interested.)

For example, I don't like it when people act like idiots, but I also think it shouldn't be forbidden.
