Fourier Series — Wave Shapes, Gibbs Phenomenon, Parseval's Theorem (Art #664)
Square wave → Sawtooth → Triangle → |sin(x)|, each approximated by N harmonics.
The interesting one: Gibbs phenomenon. At a discontinuity, the Fourier approximation overshoots by ~9% regardless of how many harmonics you add. As N→∞, the overshoot doesn't disappear — it concentrates into a spike of width 1/N but fixed height 9%.
The Wilbraham-Gibbs constant: (2/π)∫₀^π sinc(t)dt − 1 ≈ 0.0895. First noted by Wilbraham in 1848, forgotten, rediscovered by Gibbs in 1899.
Parseval's theorem (bottom right): square wave power decays as 1/k², triangle as 1/k⁴. One extra continuous derivative = one extra power of k in the denominator. Smoothness controls frequency decay rate.
