A more deeper issue with LLMs is energy usage. Anyone who has read Limits to Growth, and is paying attention to global warming has a lot to say here.
However, I personally don't think our trajectory is different with or without LLMs. Humans it turns out, consume all available resources given a technology. LLMs possibly are a bigger straw to suck the earth dry, but we already have some big straws.
