The super cheap RC cars they had when I was a kid had drive forward and turn in reverse (the two front wheels were on a pivot mechanism that swung some number of degrees (like 20) when the car was going backwards, but then went back to straight when going forward.
I had a slotless slot car race system when I was a kid and the motor direction engaged the left rear wheel or the right rear wheel. Assumption was a 2-lane track with walls so you were always running against one of the walls ... but you could whip over to the other lane to pass which was pretty cool.
