I think most people just don't really want to share their life with the whole world. They value privacy and only really want to share it with their friends and family.

Which is why Facebook worked so well before the enshitification. People controlling tightly who can read their posts. Only their friends. Hardly anyone was 'public' there.

Then Facebook blew it for everyone by going back on the deal, sharing it all with their advertisers and their ai and trying to turn the site more and more public.

So even if tightly controlled private sharing worked well in the fedi, everyone's burned about the changing promises from Facebook.

As far as I can tell everyone's in private whatsapp groups now. Which is of course also that creep Zuck, but it feels different. Increasingly Signal instead but still WAY behind.

When you're consciously only sharing with a select group of friends there's little point in federating.
