Long answer! To us, it seems that the person who drew the map considered anything under EU law to be offering 'privacy', but being under GDPR and other regulations doesn't mean a platform actually protects people's privacy.

In this list, you have European companies or projects that:

- host their data on AWS or send it outside the EU (Qobuz, Fibery...)
- are not open source (or only partially) (Proton, Vivaldi, Tuta)
- have conditional private features (Codeberg)
- aren't transparent enough in their privacy policies (if we consider GDPR requirements)

Mastodon i.e. isn't a privacy-first tool or designed for that purpose: your posts are public by default and may end up on thousands of different servers (imagine that an instance set up by an ad agency or an AI company will also collect them). Your instance may be hosted anywhere in the world (outside the scope of GDPR) and many instances have no public accountability, privacy policies and you have no idea who is behind them. Once your posts are public, they can be crawled by AI bots belonging to different companies on the internet. This means that, even if you delete your post later, it may already have been incorporated into an AI model belonging to a company you are unaware of. Direct messages aren't encrypted either.
