That is great news and I applaud the effort. My only worry is that it is far too little too late. GIMP has had so much feedback on it's UX over the last decade and for the most part, actively discouraged acting on it, that I fear the damage has been done. GIMP is almost the poster child for "FOSS with bad UX" at this point (I don't wish to throw stones, you seem like a nice person, this is just how it's discussed in design circles) It's not you, it's the history.
