It is a safe bet to say that Wulfila and Flavian don't understand each other at all. Flavian, in Wulfila's eyes, is an arrogant, small-minded petty landowner whose good fortune in inheriting a decent share of the family estate obviously cost him every bit of compassion with those whose life went less well. Wulfila, to Flavian, is a dangerous criminal and a wicked seducer of an unsuspecting respectable woman.
