I just found out, that we can only register our own account in Slashdot, by requesting it explicitly by email, and presenting a justification of why we would want that.

This is pretty unusual. I guess they did this in order to fight spam and bot accounts.

After dwelling about it for a few minutes, I totally understand this approach. It makes sense if you want to preserve the quality of the discussions.

Of course, given these new AI times, I guess that even this can be automated, for both sides, the user and the system handling these requests, so it's a short term fix.

I wouldn't be surprised if other platforms follow the same approach, when you want to guarantee a given level of human generated content quality.
