For large amounts (six figs+) I see offshore gold vaults as a compelling option. You just wouldn't put that kind of money in your relatives' home or your back yard (unless you have many, many of them). Makes way more sense to leverage the division of labor and pay for secure storage at that point.
In most jurisdictions you don't have to report the physical gold you own outside of the country, plus (surprisingly) there isn't any CRS-like snitching system for gold. Couple that with 100% allocation, 100% segregation and 100% insurance and you have a pretty solid storage plan.
