Word on my feed is that what really happened was the training data had some advanced work already moving in the direction of what it claims to have solved, and a team of humans leveraged their superior computational access to finish someone else's work and give the credit to the stochastic parrot. This is the worst kind of plagiarism, truly stomach turning news. But the big lie will be blazoned on every headline while the truth lives on only in the bitter dark souls of people who care about actual knowledge. ymmv
