I wouldn’t give up on open source projects and bitcoin only projects.

Things can hide out in the open for considerable amount of time but the open source nature of Bitcoin is what has made the reaction to all this so swift and forceful within the community.

Also Bitcoin only projects are only driving security budget to Bitcoin security. Nothing guarantees that this will catch every single issue but it’s better than splitting security budget across Bitcoin and 10000 “coins” that have no value.

And while it’s surely meaningless cold comfort to those affected - that the blast radius of this was so small, the reaction so swift and public, that there are numerous valuable alternative to quickly pivot to, and that (to my knowledge anyways) this is the first major device level failure up to now despite all the value being stored in Bitcoin - is a testament to anti fragility at scale that the Bitcoin open source project as achieved.

Quick alternative HWWs

Seedsigner (stateless, no secure element, hard airgapped)

Foundation (secure element - Passport Pro Quantum-Link airgapped, Original Passport hard/physically airgapped)

Jade (virtual secure element - blind oracle on Blockstream servers…, not airgapped but “can be used airgapped”)

Bitkey (secure element, but native technical / social multisig design, not airgapped)

Also all the above projects are open source. Even if you roll your own keys with dice, you will need to trust the software inside the HWW for checksum computation.
