When I listened to 's thoughts on why he wanted the forkiverse thing that did resonate in many ways. I understand the attempt to find or build online spaces that are not just ... shit.
And while the fediverse isn't shit at all, it's still somewhat captured by the logic of the big platforms. "Be Twitter but fewer Nazis" sounds good but I think it's not enough, it's not asking why Twitter is the way it is.
When Kevin Roose argued for just shutting down "the forkiverse" because "nobody had created a busniess there" that was of course revealing in how Kevin thinks about the Internet. But I think we've all grown up with these ideas of scale and "the global village" that we keep falling into the ame traps.

The Future of Social lies in tighter communities. PJ said that the best experiences he has are in closed messenger groups and I think many people relate to that. Because there's a limitation of context collapse, of mismatched beliefs and biases. Because _community_ really only works for small groups. If it grows too big, it no longer is a _community_.

The real question is how to build these smaller spaces without completely fragmenting and dividing us up. How to loosely connect tightly knit groups. That's where I see the future of the social web. Even if that does not let people start businesses.
