Everyone is required to carry liability insurance on their cars The legal minimum that most everyone carries isn't anywhere close to being enough to cover an extended emergency room visit, so they usually garnish wages at 25% until the debt is paid. It all depends on the court ruling.
Minimum liability coverage around here is only $25,000 per person injured, and $65,000 per accident. That doesn't even cover the price of most of the cars on the road, let alone a much more expensive hospital bill.
