It wasn't until 2007, over 30 years after OSO 8, that there was serious consideration of another X-ray polarimeter. The IXPE concept lost to GEMS. GEMS ended up being canceled due to cost overruns.

In 2014 IXPE was re-proposed and ultimately selected (hooray!) with Martin Weisskopf and Paolo Soffitta as the PIs.
