But Haywood had no ongoing dispute with Steunenberg - maybe it was an old grudge; and while the Pinkertons were still trying to get Haywood into jail, it seems unusual that they'd intentionally murder a former governor, even one from Idaho. Still, Orchard did the deed.
Based on all of that, and Orchard's autobiography, I attribute Orchard's motive to Haywood. But Orchard's confession at the hand of the Pinkertons certainly casts doubt on it.
