I just remember actual tea chests. They were a standard size (for packing in ships). somewhere around 2 feet square and maybe 3 feet high. Made of thin wood with thin metal reinforcing on the edges and corners and lined with tinfoil. The wood was a kind of plywood but very prone to delaminating if it got damp.
