Yeah, I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but I think it does that to avoid all your notifications data going through Google's servers. If you're installing fedilab from fdroid anyway, it's pretty simple to also install ntfy to provide open-source notification services though, so I didn't find it an issue.
