A majority of humans have never had easy access to any essentials.

You're thinking about it all backwards from a historical perspective. Not to mention the awful costs to one's humanity and the structures needed to enable concentrated living like that. To me, it is utterly repugnant to human flourishing. 🤷‍♂️
