Old sci-fi art was better because even with one-off paintings, there usually was some kind of implied worldbuilding that made you curious about what's going on in this world that has places and creatures that look like this.
Most modern sci-fi art is just the same featureless grey blocks in front of the same cloud background. A lot of them are technically very well done. But what's the creative ideas that went into them? What is being expressed?
