i'd like to propose that at least part of the solution be a recognition of the social value of foss projects by employment of engineers in the public service
if local governments maintained and moderated fedi instances, if public servants contributed to projects like openoffice and administered local material infrastructure like databases, if this were part of an interconnected, distributed infrastructure with international standards bodies running things like professional conferences and awards etc
i don't see that we can solve any of the problems we have without acknowledging software as essential infrastructure and a commons in alignment with environmental/climate commons
