I started out this morning listening to a podcast with Danielle Crittendon who wrote the book Dispatches From Grief: A Mother’s Journey Through the Unthinkable after her adult daughter's sudden death. I have lived with this grief for many years and read the books and the articles from grief specialists and none of them said the right things or recognized the true feeling of it. She says the same things that have floated in my mind for all these years. For one thing, it's not the same as when your parent died or your aunt or your miscarriage. I'm sorry, it's plainly not the same. You don't know. I've had all those losses and more. They don't destroy your entire world and self. You didn't die when those people did and then go through the world as a ghost. Crittendon lays out the stark truth of it. And you have to be quiet about it for the convenience of others, forever, including in some cases, with people in your own family. You know, of course, that millions of people have lost children they raised so you're not alone. But you're alone. I'll be looking for her book at my libraries but it's not there yet. Here's an article she wrote in the Atlantic.
