public education as we know it didn't exist until sometime around the 20th century. To any degree it did exist around the time of the founding, it wasn't wide spread and it most certainly wasn't compulsory. And the Founders definitely were not in public schools, they were all home schooled and/or self-educated. And public education is a horrible example if you want to argue in favor of government. It fails the children on every level.
