I can't help but wonder, long arch of history style, if the recent rise of fascism and turmoil is related to the impacts of a new communication medium.
In the 16th century, it was the printing press and the subsequent wars of religion, the Inquisition. In the 1930's it was radio and movies. Today, social media and the internet.
