#FediCoven Q13 How do you feel about Halloween?
I've always loved this liminal time of the year, and don't necessarily, really see Halloween as an appropriation of Samhain, Día de los Muertos, or like the Wild hunt, but there is something about it that irks me. Clearly it is a commercialized descendant of several traditions, so perhaps it's how much it cheapens the connection to the dead. For me, it's a profound time to connect with departed loved ones, and ancestors. The idea of that being sold back to me in such a single use plastic form feels a little gross.
For witchkind, it can be strange. Suddenly, our craft is fashionable for a few weeks. I get requests for seances, spells, dealing with ghosts, and even goth-themed bachelor parties. It's an odd mix between interest and mocking.
Next to this "All Hallows’ Eve" is certainly a very Christian framing. Which is not, hmm, my cup of tea. We've been dealing with the spirits, the dead and this liminal time of year around the harvest and onset of winter for as long as people have worked with this land, so I'd rather stand in that tradition.
And yet, seeing mischievous little dressed up witchlings skipping around the street, extorting treats from my neighbours, does make me smile. So, I will don my pointy hat and hand out cookies decorated with protection sigils.
