I sidestep a lot of that misery by staying a "subject matter expert who writes code" instead of identifying as a software developer. Had a single interview for a "scientific" software development position - never again. I don't know what I'd recommend for people who like writing code and learning to make systems better. Writing web-facing systems seems like a soul-killing dead end. Constant churn to ship worse and worse systems faster and faster on technologies obsolete before they reach v1.0, catering to the whims of careerists, oligarchs, and sociopaths.

No thanks. I'll stick to modeling sodium fires and aerosol transport of radioactives. No AI, no web, no networking, no stack, no Kubernetes, no Agile, just writing (and testing and documenting and packaging) code to solve niche technical safety problems and help engineers do engineering. Nice work if you can get it; most of the time you can't :/
