I won't be belittling talents of Yandex software developers and engineers, some of their services got popular because people like them. In Russia their offerings in several fields won in a free market competition long before current anti-competitive practices.

But yeah, virtually every company still operating in Russia participates at least in domestic surveillance, and maybe something worse. Of course they try to keep their brand names clean, but when push comes to shove — their resources might be used in foreign influence operations as well, you can never rule that out.

There is also this factor: I know that e.g. Google is bad, but I still trust them more — simply because even if they share data with their own three-letter agencies, those likely have little-to-no interest in me personally. And vice versa, I get it if an American avoiding domestic surveillance trusts Yandex more. But in EU in particular I'd indeed steer clear of companies still operating in Russia or their local branches, better be safe than sorry.

As for them accusing the Baltics of anti-competitive practices — yeah, they do it all the time, they are criticising democracies for things that are long gone in Russia, or even for things that we never had 😂
