And not to make light of your initial success, but as an avid gun owner and shooter, shooting at paper targets is _easy_ compared to firing under diress.
If you have a chance to do a more live fire event, I highly recomend it.
Forgive me that, but I am always horrified when a new shooter arrives and acts like a pistol is a standard point and click interface. Not saying you did this, bit you did say it was easier than expected..... but you hit the hostage.
Also, shooting is NOT like riding a bike. If you don't practice, the skills will degrade.
As for jerking, this is almost always due to trigger anticipation. It's a loud fucking bang going off in your hands. It is scary, and you will naturally jerk to get it over with.
Try doubling up your hearing protection if the problem persists. You'll eventually want to drop that back down, but reducing the noise while your hands, arms, and shoulders get used to to recoil is a helpful technique.
Also, get yourself a .22lr, its an easier, and CHEAPER, shoot. You can focus on form and technique. Then move up to 9mm, .45ACP, or whatever you want to be proficient with.
Forgive me the unsolicited advice, but I've been shooting guns for 40 years, and new shooters set off my safety sense.
