It depends on your technique... usually with cotton buds people end up pushing earwax further down your ear instead of getting it out of there.
You need to go in straight without touching the sides of your ear cannal, then get the earwax out by twisting and pulling at the same time along the surface of your ear cannal.
Doctors recommend using those water-earplug devices but whatever.
Some people get unlucky and produce way more earwax than others...
