When I worked as a Teacher assistant assistant, the lead teaching assistant had the students do "homework" in class to circumvent cheating. We had one student where we could see in the document history, as he screwed off in class, where suddenly a block of text appeared that was clearly copy pasted.
In my view, this is the best method to ensure original thoughts are generated.
