I have similar reservations about Yoto, it seems inevitable that one day the licensing terms will change somehow and none of the (many) cards I’ve purchased for my kids will work.
But!!!
This is a screen-lite piece of hardware which works offline and has kept my children entertained and interested in a way that I feel so, so happy about. It *is* sad that it’s unlikely they’ll be able to listen to these cards when they’re older and want to revisit their childhood. But it’s here, and it works now while my kids are still, well, kids. It is the piece of proprietary hardware I feel the most relaxed about, by far.
I don’t believe you need the smartphone app to load new cards, you should just be able to order them and put them straight in the player.
