It wasn't really "like clockwork." But it was a lot like "physics." The village was a convenient target full of physical fighters and woodworkers and they had to *live,* too, so it was always being replenished with things to raid. Medicines, tools, and all the fruits of the trade they engaged in. They were never completely cleaned out, but they were used to having to live with the roughest things of anything they enjoyed, unless they could stash something nice away long enough. Anything that ended up becoming an heirloom tended to be swiped for its particular magical applications and most of the time that just meant getting a replacement that wasn't too fancy. Plastic if it could be plastic. The mages hated the stuff. If anything was completely anti-magical, it was that. Overall, it was a simple, predictable, comfortable life. Altin was just more or less one of the "valuables" they kept taking, but he was the one Brand put his foot down for.
