After Berlusconi we had a couple of "technical" governments, i.e. prime ministers not really belonging to any party, but accepted by both sides who tried to bring the economy back from the brink of collapse. They sort of succeeded, but during this time the right had the time to complete their internal fights and establish a new pecking order, while the "left" largely disappeared. As a result, once the economy recovered a little bit, the right went back in power, with the racist and corrupt stuff that were made normal under Berlusconi now the norm.
If you want to avoid that, you need jump-start the Democratic party, kick out all the old guard who will always choose apathy, and rally around a new guard with progressive ideas.
