A rational reasonable person would have recognized right off that you'd get genocide either way, so the choice was relegated to a matter of degree. A rational reasonable person would have made the choice of the lesser degree; what we actually got was the choice of the greater degree, so rational reasoning had absolutely nothing to do with any of it.
