Yes indeed, that does put things into proper perspective. From this Yankee's perspective, though, I think it's apt to apply to the "ruling party" and "the party opposite" what I've said about Democrats and Republicans over here (and I have in the past used the term "RepubliTories")--Republicans have to get this bad before Democrats start to look good. I do see a parallel with the UK's Conservative Party needing to get head-of-lettuce bad before Labour started to look good. Labour therefore overvalued itself after the win last time. Surprise surprise surprise.
