I feel like there are multiple ways it could develop. I'm interested in it as a pair-programming assistant which helps me puzzle thru my own process of development like a chat partner with a full view into my coding session, much more than as a code generator. this is in part because I have AuDHD which has a large effect on how I work (or fail to work) and I see a role for LLM tech as a sort of cognitive prosthetic for people like me, especially when we're not in an ideal "flow" state.
