Many years ago, a late friend of mine who was active in the gay rights movement stood during his pastor’s call for intercessionary prayers and asked members of the congregation to “pray that God would enter their hearts and inspire them to give up their hateful attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community.” It may be that most pastors only ask for special intentions in silence, but perhaps evangelical churches still call for such intentions to be spoken aloud. It might be a useful tactic to use today, on behalf of the broader community that is experiencing hateful discrimination, and a tactic that even I as a non-believer am tempted to try at some local congregations.
