Its funny, I start out thinking I need to spend a half million to do local LLMs, then $100k, then $20k, then $5k, then $k. It turns out you can do this just fine on a used $300 card. About a 12 GB card is enough to hold an 9B-Q6 model with Q8 KV and get about 128k to 192k of context window. That's more than enough to triage email way faster than it comes in.

My main use case is watching my email. I have so much email that is junk that I miss about half the important stuff. About 1/4 of the important stuff is miscategorized as spam and is buried with hundreds of spam emails per day. The AI notifies me in a separate email-monitoring chat when something I need to care about comes through. It takes a while to get the prompt right, but eventually it's actually useful. I would never use a public LLM for this.
