Sikandar conquered Persia, marched into Punjab, and reached the Beas.
Then his own army effectively voted:

The great conqueror had discovered the limits of conquest.
For centuries, empires looked east. Persia, Afghanistan, the passes, the ports, the trade routes. Everybody wanted access. Everybody wanted leverage.
And beyond those corridors stood the enormous, complicated Indian subcontinent.
The old imperial fantasy was simple: control the gateway, control what lies beyond it.
But a civilization isn't a checkpoint on somebody else's conquest map.
Fast-forward to the modern world.
The horses became aircraft. The forts became military bases. The caravans became shipping lanes. The imperial courts became diplomatic summits.
And conquest increasingly gives way to a different ambition: woo India, influence India, negotiate with India.
Meanwhile, India has its own interests, its own alliances, and thousands of years of experience watching empires arrive with grand plans.
The map keeps changing. The imperial imagination takes considerably longer.
Sikandar learned that there was a limit to marching east.
Perhaps the modern world can learn that influence is not ownership.
