Publicly funded researchers and the journals in which research is published are not the same thing. Journals monopolize control on dissemination of research. Ask any publicly funded researcher and they would love nothing more than to publish all their work freely accessible and open source. The problem is they would lose their job if they did.
Academic journals are the culprits. As a publicly funded researcher you have no choice but to pay to have work published because you won't get peer reviewed in the "standard" way. No one will care about your publication because no peer review and it will have no "impact score" which is gatekept by the same academic journals charging for publishing. Oh, and you have to do free peer review for journals. Oh, and you have to pay again to get the latest journal issue with your publication in it.
Don't pay and don't do free work for journals then you lose your job.

I'm not an expert on cell cycle stuff, and especially not in humans but my general understanding is that whatever the state the cell might be in to trigger telomere maintenance, it subsequently triggers a DNA integrity check and a "decision" as to what to do thereafter, like damage response and cell fate. Telomere maintenance is complicated machinery composed of many different proteins and functional RNAs, including telomerase, which interacts with a number of pathways to regulate itself. I just wouldn't know if your hypothesis is reasonable.
Great career move. I personally find it gratifying. Aging is a fascinating field of research, so much that we just don't know and maybe can't know. I had some colleagues in an adjacent lab a while back working on aging. They were trying to understand how telomerase depletion, which basically leads to faster aging, was being caused. It wasn't obvious from genomic studies so they were looking at phases downstream. Could also be due to a breakdown somewhere else entirely that cascades down to telomerase translation.
Just having an acktually moment, not out for blood.
I study genomics and evolution of symbiotic relationships, mostly in microbes.
In nature there is no notion of joining forces to make something "better" or more complex. There's no plan at the outset to build an animal, only endless incremental tinkering and change.
There's plenty of well-studied cases of specialization in behavior of bacteria when, for example, they hit quorum and you start to see some emergent macro properties. I don't see why there couldn't be more complex extensions of that behavior. No multicellularity required there.

There are three reasons to keep your savings in a bank:

A message to men entering their forties.

Another postponement.
Enough.
Krishna's instruction in Gita 18.63 is extraordinary: reflect upon everything, then act according to your judgment.
Even the divine charioteer does not replace discernment with blind obedience.
You are not required to despise your father.
You are not required to burn the house of your ancestors.
But you are not required to remain imprisoned in it either.
The blood still moves.
The sun still rises.
The horses still possess their fire.
And the man who reaches forty with his mind intact, his body disciplined, and his conscience awake is not approaching the end of his usefulness.
He is finally old enough to recognise whose hands have been holding the reins.
Take them.
Not in anger.
Not in vengeance.
But with the terrible composure of a man who knows what remains of his life belongs to his own dharma.
THE FATHERS GAVE YOU A BEGINNING.
THEY DO NOT GET TO WRITE YOUR ENDING.
Let Krishna hold the reins of wisdom.
Let the warrior reclaim his chariot.
Let the inherited chains end with him.
