Only the proven survive.
Three Latin words. Nearly two thousand years of philosophical history behind the idea.
And an extraordinarily fitting motto for the age of artificial intelligence.
In the first century AD, the Roman Stoic philosopher Seneca wrote:
IGNIS AURUM PROBAT, MISERIA FORTES VIROS.
Fire tests gold; adversity tests brave men.
The principle was simple. Worth is not established through reputation, wealth or authority. It is revealed through examination.
Centuries later, the Latin Vulgate preserved another remarkable expression in 1 Corinthians 11:19:
UT ET QUI PROBATI SUNT MANIFESTI FIANT.
So that those who are proven may be revealed.
And in 1 Corinthians 3:13, an even more striking idea:
UNIUSCUIUSQUE OPUS QUALE SIT, IGNIS PROBABIT.
Fire will test the quality of each person's work.
Think about that.
Nearly two thousand years ago, people were already articulating the distinction between what is claimed and what is proven.
PROBATI. The tested. The examined. The proven.
The exact motto Soli Probati Supersunt is not one I can trace to an ancient source. But its philosophical roots run deep through Roman Stoicism and early Christian thought.
Now consider what happens when we apply that ancient principle to modern computation.
AI models. Distributed systems. Smart contracts. Autonomous machines. Digital commerce.
Not who built them. Not who funded them. Not who endorsed them.
What can they demonstrably do? What survives independent verification?
That is the philosophy behind DamageBDD and ECAI.
Behaviour becomes executable. Evidence becomes cryptographically verifiable. Mathematical claims become subject to proof. Results become independently examinable.
The ancient world tested gold with fire.
The modern world can test software with executable evidence.
And perhaps the future of intelligence will be decided not by who makes the greatest claims, but by whose claims survive verification.
DAMAGE.
SOLI PROBATI SUPERSUNT.
Only the proven remain.

Only the proven survive.
Three Latin words. An entire philosophy of engineering, mathematics, intelligence and survival.
PROBATI SUPERSUNT.
Not the loudest. Not the richest. Not the most connected. Not the most heavily funded.
The proven.
For centuries, humanity has built institutions around authority, reputation, promises and trust.
But what happens when trust itself becomes the vulnerability?
You replace belief with evidence.
You replace promises with executable specifications.
You replace authority with independent verification.
You replace speculation with mathematical certainty wherever proof is possible.
That is the philosophy behind DamageBDD.
Distributed behavioural verification. Cryptographic evidence. Independently verifiable execution. Economic incentives tied to outcomes.
Not because somebody said it works.
Because it survived the test.
And when intelligence, computation, commerce and autonomous systems begin operating at planetary scale, verification stops being an optional feature.
It becomes the foundation.
The beauty of the Latin is its brutal simplicity.
It doesn't promise that everyone wins.
It doesn't care who you are.
It asks what remains after examination.
DAMAGE.

**A Long Cloud on Mars**

Explanation: Explanation: What’s causing this unusually long cloud on Mars ? Known as the Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud (AMEC) and first recorded by NASA’s Viking Orbiter 2 in 1977, the strange cloud has been imaged in greater detail more recently by ESA ’s robotic Mars Express spacecraft. The featured image is from 2018. The cloud forms only during spring and summer seasons and then only during morning hours. Made of water-ice, the most familiar process that causes cloud crystals to form around bits of dust would fail due to the thinness and lack of dust high in the Martian atmosphere . Leading speculation holds that dust is not involved. After the cloud forms near the volcano Arsia Mons , wind blows the cloud downstream — creating a tail that can extend over 1500 kilometers. Efforts to better understand AMEC s will continue, an understanding that may bolster a more complete view of cloud formation on Earth . Tomorrow's picture: eyeing a cat

I'm the one who programs our jukebox; the sextant. I also light the dozens of candles and set up the table for communion and train the younger altar servers and herd the first communion children around. The little ones are like a gaggle of geese. 😂
I turn it off and ring manually during the Mass. We use #5 for the death bell, #5-#2 for minor Masses, and #5-#1 for high Masses. After celebratory Masses, we ring the bells for 15 minutes, otherwise 5 minutes. The bells go silent on Maundy Thursday and we use wooden ratchets until Easter.
It's 6:01, so they're ringing now. I am usually awake before they begin.
When people hear that the death bell tolls, they come up to the parish billboard, to see whose death has been announced.
Before they had that (and before the mechanical ringer that predated the electronic one), you had to climb the bell tower and ring, every quarter hour, so the sacristan lived in the parish house. Now, only the priest lives there, with any visiting deacons or speakers.
People in the village used wind their clocks to match their church bell, which was recalibrated daily according to the solar clock. But the bells of the various churches rang at slightly different times, so it was a cacophony. We can hear the neighboring village bell, on some days.
And at the Angelus (18:30) everyone would stop working for the day and pray, and then go home for supper. A lot of people tell their kids to come home when the Angelus rings. You can hear it throughout the town.
A place without bells seems weird to me, now.
