Prehistoric battle axe blocked from leaving UK
A prehistoric battle-axe head discovered in 1974 at Scarthingwell, near Tadcaster in North Yorkshire, has been temporarily blocked from export to give museums and local collectors a chance to buy it and keep it in the UK where it can be on public display. It is more than 4,000 years old, dating to the Bronze Age.
The battle-axe provides valuable insight into the role these objects played in expressing status, identity and changing ways of life in Neolithic and Bronze Age Britain. It also has significant research potential, offering future generations an opportunity to learn more about this period of our shared national history.
Discovered by accident during construction work but only reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme in 2012, the axe head is made of diorite, a hard igneous rock with a distinctive mottled pattern. It has curved edges, a central hole for the handle and highly polished surface that emphasizes the natural pattern in the stone. It is in exceptional condition.
According to Tim Pestell, member of the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest (RCEWA), cutting a hard stone like this into a tapered shape with a central hole and then polishing it to a bright shine would have required hundreds of hours of hard work. The emphasis on aesthetics in the production of the piece suggest it was not just a utilitarian device.
In a profound period of change, the Early Bronze Age witnessed a society previously restricted to flint tool technology adopting metalwork. Despite this, battle axes became some of the most powerful symbolic objects, labelled by one scholar as ‘blunt instruments of power’. Made of stone rather than metal, they conveyed important social, sacred and political messages.
The axe head’s outstanding connection the British history, aesthetic significance and importance to the study of artifacts like it meets the first, second and third of the Waverley criteria used by the committee to make its determination. On the recommendation of RCEWA, Heritage Minister Baroness Twycross imposed a temporary export bar on the prehistoric artefact. Potential purchasers have until December 22 to make a good faith effort to raise the funds to acquire the axe head for the recommended price of £15,000 ($16,700).

Towable 80 kW hydrogen generator brings clean power off-grid
Ballard Power Systems, through its GeoPura subsidiary, has introduced the HPU Agile-H, an 80 kW mobile hydrogen generator designed to displace diesel generators on job sites with strict space or noise constraints.
Designed by GeoPura, manufactured by Siemens Energy, and powered by a Ballard Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell, the platform integrates an onboard high-efficiency battery storage system.
The hybrid setup delivers 80 kW of continuous 400V 3-phase AC power at 50/60Hz. The fuel cell provides steady baseline output, while the integrated battery handles load balancing, peak demand responsiveness, and instant cold starts. Fueling of the system relies on 100% green hydrogen charged by renewable energy sources.
For operational flexibility, the system operates in off-grid mode, grid synchronization mode, or as a standalone primary source. Multiple units can also be connected in parallel to serve higher electrical loads or build hardware redundancy.
“From construction and film shoots to events and emergency response, HPU Agile-H brings clean power to more places, without diesel fumes and with less noise,” the companies stated.
The unit targets lower-load profiles, short-term projects, and operations with limited access to grid infrastructure. Built for rapid field logistics, the lightweight trailer can be towed using standard SUVs or commercial panel vans and set up by a single technician in under 20 minutes without specialized rigging licenses.
The unit’s safety systems include continuous hydrogen leak detection, smoke and fire monitoring, and hardwired interlocks.
Operating below 65 dB at 1 meter, the unit produces zero point-of-use emissions. It incorporates cloud telemetry for remote diagnostics and achieves a 99% expected availability rate across a 10-year design life, supported by GeoPura’s low-carbon hydrogen supply network.
The HPU Agile-H holds tri-certification (CE, UL, CSA) for deployment across North America, the United Kingdom, and Europe. Pre-orders are currently open, with initial commercial deliveries set for Q1 2027.

Super Compact Passive Bookshelf Recommendations
The wife and I moved from a house to a condo I am looking to replace my LS50 Metas with something even smaller (at her suggestion). My previous setup was:
MiniDSP 2x4HD w/ Dirac Live
SMSL DO100
SMSL AO200mk2
Pair of LS50 Metas
Klipsch RP-1400SW
And I absolutely loved it. I was planning to change my 2.1 stereo to a 3.1 or 3.2 LCR in-wall setup with Monitor Audio WSS230s around a TV…
…BUT I demo’d some WSS430s at a local hifi shop and they sound too small, even with a good sub. I mean they...

Bitcoin fell below $80,000 after the Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.75%–4% on October 28. BTC traded around $79,800, down 1.5% over 24 hours, despite renewed demand for U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs. Two Fed policymakers favored a quarter-point increase, underscoring persistent concerns about inflation.
According to SoSoValue data cited in the report, the ETFs drew $423.66 million across October 26–28, including $137.33 million in the latest session. Those inflows followed substantial withdrawals the previous week and did not prevent the price decline. Fund subscriptions do not necessarily produce an immediate or proportionate gain in Bitcoin's market price. Santiment also reported weaker weekday transaction and active-address counts for October 14–27 than the July–September averages, offering little evidence of accelerating network activity.

Did you know Bitcoin’s first block contains a message from 2009?
When Satoshi Nakamoto mined the first Bitcoin block, they included a headline from The Times about the UK Chancellor being on the brink of another bank bailout.
It became part of Bitcoin’s permanent history.
