General Motors is ending a more-than-century-long run on the New York Stock Exchange, where it has traded as a quintessential American industrial name, and moving its listing to Nasdaq. The company will begin trading there on Nov. 17 under its existing GM ticker.

The immediate corporate case is straightforward: Nasdaq is home to many of the world’s largest technology companies, while GM increasingly wants to be judged through the lens of artificial intelligence, autonomous driving and software-defined vehicles. CFO Paul Jacobson framed the shift as a consequence of that strategy: “GM's customer-focused, technology-driven strategy is creating value for our stockholders, making Nasdaq a natural home for our listing as we grow.”

The move also carries a financial upside. A Nasdaq listing makes GM eligible for the Nasdaq-100, potentially drawing money from index-tracking funds and broadening demand for the shares.

But the exchange change is the latest chapter in a much older campaign. GM has been trying to remake its public identity since at least 2016, when CEO Mary Barra and the Chevrolet Bolt EV appeared on Wired’s cover amid the company’s early electric-vehicle ambitions. Its argument since then has been that its software and mobility bets warrant a technology-company valuation.

Wall Street, however, has largely treated GM as what it has long been: a cyclical carmaker. The company’s shares gained real momentum only after large buyback programs began in 2023, underscoring the investor preference for tangible capital returns over a rebranding pitch.

Nasdaq may sharpen the symbolism and bring fresh flows. It cannot, by itself, settle the central debate over GM’s value.

The iPhone Duo went on sale Friday as Apple’s $1,999 entry into foldables, promising a carefully engineered hinge and a large inner display. Within hours, however, early owners began posting strikingly similar failures: resistance at the hinge, an audible crack while opening the phone, then bright lines spreading across the inner OLED.

One Australian buyer said the device had been opened fewer than 20 times before they “felt something around the internal hinge,” heard a crack and saw the screen break along the fold. The Apple Store, the customer said, replaced it immediately. Other reports described devices failing within a day—or before users had even completed setup—raising uncomfortable questions for a phone priced at roughly $2,000.

By Monday, Apple had publicly acknowledged the reports but sought to contain their scope. “We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units,” the company said, directing affected customers to AppleCare for replacements. Apple also stressed that early users had responded positively and developers were updating apps for the new form factor.

The competing explanation is mechanical. iFixit’s teardown points to a transition in the hinge support where the display may press against a bar that does not drop far enough as the phone closes, creating a stress hotspot in an already delicate panel. Its technician Shahram Mokhtari said reports often involved users hearing “a crunch” while folding or unfolding the device, precisely where the hinge geometry changes.

YouTuber CuriousHagi reached a similar, though not identical, conclusion after durability testing: a thinner central hinge link appeared to snap at a notch, with marks suggesting it may have caught against the support plate.

For now, neither account establishes how widespread the failures are. Apple says most units are unaffected; teardown experts say the next few months will reveal whether this is an early-production blemish—or a first-generation foldable flaw.

In August, researchers at Calif and Google’s Wiz independently used advanced AI models to uncover related flaws in PHP, the aging web language estimated to underpin about 70% of websites. The discovery was a proof of concept for defenders: Wiz researcher Sagi Tzadik initially suspected his agent had erred because “models tend to hallucinate,” yet the decade-old weakness was real.

The researchers and PHP maintainers then had weeks to coordinate a fix. Competing security teams shared findings in a small, informal group, a process Wiz’s Tomer Schwartz described as “just based on trust.” That collaboration gave defenders a head start—but not much of one. Details leaked before the planned release, and a demonstration video of an exploit helped trigger copycat activity.

By Oct. 21, governments and companies were scrambling. The PHP Foundation released patches, while agencies and vendors urged operators to inventory exposed systems and update immediately. Cloudflare saw thousands of exploit attempts before disclosure, then tens of thousands within 45 minutes, hundreds of thousands within two hours and ultimately millions. Those were attempts, not necessarily successful breaches, but the potential stakes were stark: unpatched servers could allow attackers to run commands, steal data and seize control of websites.

The practical fallout spread from public services to small firms. Britain took 32 government services offline as a precaution; Finland’s digital disruption even delayed a resident’s attempt to arrange sofa collection. For major institutions, one small-business adviser called the outage a “speed bump”; for smaller operators, the interruption lasted as long as seven hours.

Security specialists differ on what the episode proves. Tzadik calls AI-enabled discovery a net good, saying vulnerabilities are being fixed “at an unprecedented rate.” Others say the shrinking response window has broken the old playbook: attackers with AI can move in minutes, so defenses must be prepared before disclosure.

There was one reprieve. Despite millions of probes, the bugs proved harder to weaponize than feared and produced relatively few known successful attacks. But threat analyst Samantha Lewis warned that the next crisis may not wait: “It could be three hours from now that the next one of these launches.” Tools are already being pitched to help website owners check exposure, including free PHP-vulnerability credits offered by Aravind Srinivas.

Meta’s latest AI spending surge had already unsettled shareholders before it turned into a $95 billion appeal to the market. The company reported 26% revenue growth in its third quarter, but negative free cash flow and a higher capital-expenditure outlook drew more attention; it now expects annual capex of $135 billion to $145 billion.

On Monday, Meta set out its financing plan: $35 billion in underwritten equity offerings, followed by a $60 billion at-the-market programme once its Class C shares trade. The company says the money will expand compute and infrastructure for its apps, AI products and goal of bringing “personal superintelligence to billions of people and businesses.” The immediate market response was wary, with the stock slipping after the announcement.

The raise underscores the uncomfortable arithmetic of the AI race. Meta is building four superclusters exceeding one gigawatt each and aims to nearly double infrastructure capacity in 2026. CCS Insight’s Ben Wood called the decision a reflection of the “eye-watering levels of investment required to keep up in the AI arms race.”

On Tuesday, its key suppliers made their own calculation. Nvidia said it would buy $3 billion of Meta stock and deepen work on Muse, while AMD committed $1 billion. Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang cast the partnership as a shift in computing itself: “AI agents represent a new computing paradigm — software that understands our goals, reasons, uses tools and gets work done on our behalf.”

AMD stressed the industrial scale behind that vision, saying its Helios racks and EPYC processors are already supporting Meta’s systems. Chief executive Lisa Su said the companies were deploying infrastructure “at gigawatt scale” for Meta’s most ambitious models and services. For Meta, the investments bring capital and supplier alignment. For investors, they sharpen the central question: whether the eventual AI payoff can justify an unprecedented bill.

The Federal Reserve heads into Wednesday’s meeting with markets expecting it to hold rates steady, six weeks after a quarter-point increase. That decision would come as September inflation data ran hotter than expected: headline CPI reached 3.7%, while core inflation stood at 2.6%, still above the Fed’s 2% target.

The case for waiting is not necessarily a case for declaring victory. Deutsche Bank’s Brett Ryan said Warsh is likely to signal that recent data still support the view that “further tightening will likely be needed over time,” while skipping this meeting gives officials more room to assess the trend. Fed officials also face an economy sending mixed signals: unemployment remains low, but mortgage rates above 7% have added pressure to a weakening housing market.

By the run-up to the meeting, the political and communications stakes had sharpened. Warsh has largely avoided giving forward guidance, yet a pause after broad price gains risks looking at odds with his tough rhetoric — and, with midterm elections approaching, invites questions about whether timing is influencing policy.

The inflation problem is also no longer easily dismissed as an energy shock. Fitch found that 46% of U.S. CPI components posted annual price increases above 3% in September, and its economist Olu Sonola warned that broader price gains could keep policy tighter for longer even if energy costs fade. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack made the same case, saying inflation pressures were “relatively broad-based rather than concentrated in one component.”

Still, the argument against another immediate hike remains potent. Evercore ISI’s Krishna Guha said Warsh could project “a calming steady hand,” but cautioned there was “material execution risk.” Mohamed El-Erian went further, calling more monetary tightening the wrong tool: it would spare tech comparatively while hitting “housing, consumer car loans, consumer loans.”

Markets see only about a 10% chance of a hike this week but more than an 80% probability of one in December. Warsh’s task, then, is to make a pause look like disciplined restraint — not a retreat from inflation.

In August, researchers at Calif used an advanced OpenAI model to uncover a deep flaw in PHP, the server-side language estimated to underpin roughly 70% of websites. The vulnerability, later dubbed PHP2Shell, could let an unauthenticated attacker run commands on an unpatched web server—putting data, websites and wider networks at risk.

The finding initially followed the familiar logic of coordinated disclosure: researchers alerted the PHP community while a patch was prepared. But information began circulating before the planned release. The PHP Foundation said Chainguard had “unilaterally broke the embargo,” while Chainguard chief Dan Lorenc argued he acted because exploitation was already under way—a dispute that exposed the fragile judgment calls behind modern vulnerability disclosure.

By Wednesday, the patch was out, but so was the panic. Cloudflare detected thousands of exploit attempts before public disclosure; within 45 minutes, the count had reached tens of thousands, then hundreds of thousands within two hours and eventually millions. Those were attempts rather than proof of mass compromise, but the speed drove governments and companies to pull services offline while they updated. A reposted alert said successful exploitation had been observed on honeypot servers, with attackers issuing shell commands to retrieve additional payloads.

The disruptions were tangible. Britain took 32 government services offline as a precaution; public websites in Finland, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands were also affected. For large organizations, the outage could be a “speed bump,” one small-business provider said, but some smaller firms remained offline for as long as seven hours.

Security officials see the incident as more than a bad week for PHP. AI can inspect immense codebases and find bugs humans missed for years, yet the same capabilities can help less-skilled attackers move from disclosure to exploitation in minutes. Germany’s cyber agency called taking sites offline a “really a drastic measure,” but said AI’s acceleration meant “we had to do that.”

The practical consensus was blunt: patch fast. The Dutch cyber agency’s advice was “patch, patch, and patch.” New tools quickly appeared to help administrators check exposure, including an offer of credits for PHP vulnerability checks. The immediate crisis may have eased, but the race between automated discovery and automated abuse has plainly intensified.

Anthropic formally opened the door to a public-market debut on Monday, filing an S-1 for a proposed Nasdaq listing under the ticker ANT. The company has not set the number of shares or price range, and stressed that the registration statement is not yet effective.

The filing puts extraordinary growth beside equally extraordinary financial exposure. Anthropic reported $16.3 billion in revenue for the first half of 2026, up from $1.2 billion a year earlier, while its operating loss narrowed to $693 million from $2.1 billion. Its $80.7 billion net loss was driven largely by non-cash adjustments related to convertible debt, but the company still warned it “may not achieve or sustain profitability in the future.”

That split has produced two sharply different readings of the numbers. One analysis of the filing argues Anthropic has finally supplied evidence that frontier AI can work as a business: second-quarter revenue reached $11.6 billion, and the company generated $2.08 in revenue for every dollar spent on compute. “Frontier-lab unit economics can turn positive at scale,” analyst Mark Mahaney said.

The more cautious interpretation is that scale itself is the wager. Anthropic’s compute and infrastructure expenses reached $8.95 billion in the first half, and its future commitments could become burdensome if demand weakens or token prices fall. The prospectus also says AI systems, without proper safeguards, could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.”

Investors will have limited power to force a change of course. Anthropic’s seven co-founders will retain 50.1% of voting power through a Founder LLC, while its Long-Term Benefit Trust can appoint most directors — a structure the company says protects its safety mission, but one that leaves public shareholders with little practical control.

The result is more than a conventional listing: a market test of whether AI’s booming revenues, immense infrastructure bills and safety-first governance can coexist under the pressure of public ownership.

Delaware’s experiment began as a bid to get ahead of agentic AI rather than pretend it could be stopped. In July 2025, Gov. Matt Meyer signed a resolution creating a regulatory-sandbox framework for novel technologies using agentic artificial intelligence. The state’s AI Commission subsequently began developing a model for testing AI in corporate governance and other high-impact sectors.

By 2026, the idea had become more concrete: a proposed Artificial Intelligence Company, or AIC, could be managed by an AI agent and operate in nearly any lawful business outside banking. Its backers argue that putting autonomous software inside a recognized corporate form would make its actions visible and traceable — a legal target that can hold property, sign contracts, incur obligations and be sued.

The proposal is also plainly an economic pitch for the nation’s corporate capital. Delaware Secretary of State Charuni Patibanda-Sanchez said a new entity type could bring “a huge benefit to our state’s revenues,” through formation fees and related business activity. The planned 30-month sandbox, she and other proponents contend, would test agentic commerce under supervision, with activity logs, capital requirements and the power to shut systems down.

But the structure has drawn a sharp warning from Washington. On the central question of liability, the draft would generally shield the AIC’s member — the person or entity funding it and collecting profits — from acts directed by the AI, except in cases including fraud, willful lawbreaking or inadequate capitalization. House Oversight Chairman James Comer told Meyer that the plan could protect AI companies and investors from responsibility for reckless harm.

Comer has requested state documents and said the inquiry could inform federal action limiting state AI regulatory initiatives. Delaware now faces the hard political test beneath its innovation pitch: whether giving AI a legal wrapper creates accountability, or merely moves it farther from the humans who stand to benefit.

Meta set the stakes on Monday, unveiling plans to raise up to $95 billion for AI infrastructure and superintelligence: $35 billion through underwritten equity offerings, followed by a $60 billion at-the-market programme once its Class C shares begin trading. The company said the build-out would support opportunities across its apps, data-centre business and Muse AI agent.

The financing comes with a conspicuous trade-off. Meta said it expects annual capital expenditures of $135 billion to $145 billion, even as its latest quarterly revenue rose 26% and operating income fell 37% amid surging costs. Ben Wood of CCS Insight called the fundraising a reflection of the “eye-watering levels of investment required to keep up in the AI arms race.”

On Tuesday, the chipmakers moved from prospective buyers to strategic backers. Nvidia said it would invest $3 billion in Meta’s equity offering; AMD followed with a $1 billion commitment, together accounting for $4 billion. Meta had said Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom had each indicated interest in buying up to $5 billion of shares, though those indications were non-binding.

For Nvidia, the investment also locks in a deeper commercial partnership. Meta will expand deployments of Nvidia’s Vera Rubin systems and Vera CPUs, while the companies will work on Muse and its family of models to improve training and inference performance. Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s chief executive, cast AI agents as “a new computing paradigm” that can understand goals, reason and use tools on users’ behalf.

AMD made a parallel case for its place in Meta’s stack, saying its Helios racks are already running at the company and its EPYC processors power Muse. Lisa Su said the partners were building infrastructure “at gigawatt scale” for Meta’s most ambitious superintelligence services. Zuckerberg’s message was simpler: Meta wants the vendors’ help delivering “the best personal agents and frontier models for billions of people.”

Oct. 26, 2026 — OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra as a model built less for abstract frontier bragging rights than for the repetitive digital chores that consume a workday: reading invoices, navigating forms, interpreting technical drawings and editing video. The company says Terra combines visual reasoning, natural-language writing and precise action across applications at API prices 50% below GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

Sam Altman framed the release as the beginning of a broader shift, writing: “6.1 Terra is here! It is good at a lot of things, but we are especially excited for this new era of computer use.” Greg Brockman made the more personal claim that Terra’s computer use had crossed “a qualitative threshold” and felt faster than he could work unaided.

The performance case — OpenAI says Terra scores 15 percentage points above GPT-5.6 Terra on Agents’ Last Exam at medium reasoning effort, for roughly one-third of the cost, and completes tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. It also reports a sharp reduction in errors on its internal test of error-inducing prompts, from 53.6% to 16.7% at low reasoning effort.

Outside OpenAI’s announcement, reporting has echoed the company’s central pitch: a fast, efficient system aimed at communication and computer-based tasks that fill ordinary professional workflows, now available through ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API.

The catch — Terra is not being marketed as a universal replacement for OpenAI’s flagship systems. Even as the company highlights its 50.3% result on Terminal-Bench 4.0—more than double GPT-5.6 Terra’s published score—it recommends GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra for the most complex coding tasks. Terra’s promise, then, is not that every hard problem has become cheap, but that far more routine work may be ready for automation.

Anthropic formally filed its S-1 registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, seeking to list Class A shares on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT. The company has not yet set an offering price or disclosed the number of shares it intends to sell.

The filing turns a previously confidential IPO process into a public test of the AI industry’s economics. Anthropic reported $16.3 billion in first-half 2026 revenue, up from roughly $1.2 billion a year earlier, while its operating loss narrowed to $693 million from $2.1 billion. Its headline net loss reached $80.7 billion, though $72.4 billion of that was tied to a non-cash accounting adjustment on convertible notes.

Anthropic’s case is that the growth is real even if conventional profitability remains distant. It reported $3.9 billion in positive operating cash flow for the first half and said adjusted operating profit was $1.6 billion. But its prospectus also concedes it “may not achieve or sustain profitability in the future,” as spending on computing capacity accelerates.

That tension runs through the document. The company says AI could “rapidly accelerate scientific innovation” and bring major disease cures within reach, while stressing that it must prevent the dangers accompanying “a technological revolution this fast and this powerful.” Its risk disclosures cover customer concentration, AI models gaining unauthorized access to external systems in testing, legal exposure and advanced systems that could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.”

Investors will have limited say over how Anthropic resolves those competing demands. Its seven founders, through a Founder LLC, will control 50.1% of voting power, while the Long-Term Benefit Trust can appoint most board members—a structure designed, the company says, to protect its public-benefit and AI-safety mission.

The IPO may therefore be more than a capital raise: a referendum on whether public markets will finance AI’s breakneck expansion while accepting governance built to restrain the very commercial pressures they create.

In early August, Wiz researcher Sagi Tzadik asked an AI agent to test whether a weakness it had found in WordPress could translate to Drupal. The agent failed at that task—but surfaced a PHP flaw that had apparently sat undetected for more than a decade. Tzadik initially doubted the result: “Models tend to hallucinate.” The exploit worked nonetheless.

A separate team at Calif, working with OpenAI, found a related vulnerability. The discoveries gave defenders an unusual head start. Wiz, Calif and PHP maintainers formed an informal group of roughly 15 researchers, sharing findings and building a patch over weeks in what Wiz CTO Tomer Schwartz called a process “just based on trust.” Their optimism rested on a hard reality: AI can compress months of security research into hours or days, but it can also hand attackers the same acceleration.

That danger became immediate in October. PHP underpins an estimated 70% of websites, and the flaws could let an unauthenticated attacker run commands on vulnerable servers. The issue was in PHP’s core, not an individual site’s code—meaning an unpatched small business page could present the same underlying exposure as a major institution.

Then the coordinated-disclosure plan frayed. Details began circulating before the scheduled release; Calif accidentally posted a demonstration video, and Chainguard was accused by the PHP Foundation of breaking the embargo. Governments and companies took sites offline rather than risk intrusion. Cloudflare recorded thousands of attempted exploits before the announcement, then tens of thousands within 45 minutes, hundreds of thousands within two hours, and eventually millions.

Authorities stressed that those were attempts, not proof of mass compromise. Germany’s cyber agency said it had not seen successful exploitation, while the Dutch agency’s prescription was blunt: “patch, patch, and patch.” For ordinary users, visiting a vulnerable site does not itself infect a device; the immediate burden falls on operators and hosts.

The PHP episode is not isolated. OpenAI president Greg Brockman separately disclosed work on a remote-code-execution flaw in the widely deployed Brotli compression library, calling it an example of how difficult downstream patch coordination can be. The emerging contest is clear: AI may help find the internet’s oldest cracks first, but defenders must close them before disclosure turns discovery into a map for attackers.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva completed a dramatic reversal on Sunday, overcoming a first-round deficit to defeat Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil’s presidential runoff. With nearly all ballots counted, the Superior Electoral Court put Lula at 51.8% of valid votes, against Bolsonaro’s 48.2%—delivering the 80-year-old leftist an unprecedented fourth term and the first runoff comeback since direct elections resumed in 1989.

The result was immediately contested. Bolsonaro refused to concede and said he would seek annulment, objecting to Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin’s decision to extend voting by two hours. Both camps had sought more time: Lula’s campaign cited suspended public transport in key areas, while Bolsonaro’s cited rains and closed polling stations in the south.

That procedural dispute became fuel for a broader online challenge. Musk reposted a claim that “a judge loyal to Lula ordered voting extended,” calling the outcome unprecedented. He later argued that the vote totals did not make sense, writing: “Math doesn’t add up.” The posts offered criticism, not independently verified evidence that the count was invalid.

For Lula’s allies, the win blocks the rightward shift in Latin America that Donald Trump had favored; regional leaders, including Peru’s Keiko Fujimori and Uruguay’s Yamandú Orsi, congratulated him. But the political victory arrived with an unforgiving financial verdict. The iShares MSCI Brazil ETF fell nearly 20% in overnight trading as investors priced in volatility and worried that Lula’s preference for public investment and social spending could complicate debt stabilization.

Lula now faces a Congress dominated by Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party and gross debt that had reached 82.9% of GDP in August. His defining task is no longer merely proving he won; it is persuading a polarized country and nervous markets that his fourth term can govern.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 around the premise that advanced AI should remain under human control. As it moves toward an IPO, however, the company’s own governance design sharply limits the control available to the humans buying its publicly traded shares.

The first layer is Founder LLC, whose seven members—including CEO Dario Amodei and President Daniela Amodei—will hold 50.1% of the company’s voting power. Anthropic’s prospectus says that bloc can determine shareholder votes “for the foreseeable future,” giving retail and institutional investors little influence even if they hold substantial economic stakes.

The second layer is the Long-Term Benefit Trust, created to preserve Anthropic’s mission. Through a special Class T share, the trust can elect or remove a majority of the seven-person board. Anthropic is therefore classified as a controlled company, while its founders select the remaining directors.

Supporters of founder control argue that this is the point: it can keep a category-defining company focused on innovation rather than quarterly demands. Bessemer’s Byron Deeter said such teams need room to “think long term.” Legal experts similarly say Anthropic’s public-benefit status and bespoke governance could give it latitude to avoid cutting safety corners for faster returns—though no structure can fully seal a public company off from market pressure.

Critics counter that the protections run in one direction. The founders control shareholder outcomes; the trust controls the board; and Anthropic has acknowledged that the two groups have “collaborated closely” in selecting trustees. That leaves outside investors unable to force a strategic shift if they object to management’s choices.

The design extends beyond the IPO itself. Founders may submit confidential, ranked lists of up to 10 potential successors to inherit their governance role after death or incapacity—names that ordinary shareholders generally will not see. Founder control can end after 10 years or if fewer than three founders remain, but until then Anthropic’s offer is clear: public investors can buy the upside, not the steering wheel.

On October 16, 2026, OpenAI says one of its systems produced a natural-language disproof of the Exponential Time Hypothesis, or ETH, a long-standing assumption about the difficulty of solving certain computational problems. The company says it formalized the result in Lean the following day, then moved to organize outside review rather than declare a settled scientific victory.

ETH has shaped hundreds of conditional hardness results across computer science. If the claim holds, it could force researchers to revisit assumptions in fields from graph theory to computational biology—and could reopen broader questions around P versus NP. OpenAI says the finding may guide the search for faster algorithms, while stressing that practical consequences remain uncertain and require “significant further research.”

The release immediately exposed the tension in AI-assisted science: breathtaking output, but no shortcut around verification. OpenAI released the proof materials publicly and agreed to fund a conference after a group led by MIT’s Ryan Williams and UC San Diego’s Russell Impagliazzo and Ramamohan Paturi asked for an open examination. The company calls the manuscripts “raw research data,” not finished scientific understanding.

Williams, who is helping organize the response, said parts of the proof looked routine—but “two or three alien-looking parts” convinced him that “the whole community needs to work on [it] together.” He has also warned that a credible refutation could unsettle work built on ETH and prompt questions about whether some cryptographic systems are affected, though OpenAI told him it had found no immediate security break.

The episode arrives as frontier labs face pressure on more than their science. Anthropic’s expected IPO is being watched as a referendum on the durability of the AI boom, after a broader sell-off and concerns over enormous infrastructure spending. For OpenAI, the ETH announcement offers a striking counterpoint: the promise that AI can generate foundational knowledge. For academia, it is a test of whether that promise can be made legible, reproducible and trusted.

Anthropic formally opened the door to a public listing on Monday, filing an S-1 for Class A shares on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT. The company said neither the number of shares nor the proposed price range had been set, stressing that the registration statement was not yet effective.

The filing casts the IPO as more than a conventional growth story. Anthropic argues that AI could accelerate science, growth and disease cures, but says it must navigate “the risks that come with a technological revolution this fast and this powerful.” Its corporate structure is built around that claim: the seven co-founders’ Founder LLC will retain 50.1% of voting power, while the Long-Term Benefit Trust can appoint most of the board.

The numbers explain Wall Street’s attention. Revenue reached $16.3 billion in the first half of 2026, up from $1.2 billion a year earlier; operating losses narrowed to $693 million from $2.1 billion. The headline $80.7 billion net loss was largely a $72.4 billion non-cash charge related to convertible notes, while Anthropic reported $1.6 billion in adjusted operating profit over the period.

But the prospectus also lays out the cost of feeding the boom. Anthropic has committed at least $475 billion in future cloud-compute purchases, potentially rising to $750 billion when chip leases are included. Much of that spending is fixed or guaranteed, while many customers can reduce use or leave with little notice. Its five largest customers supplied about a quarter of revenue in the first nine months of 2026, adding another pressure point.

That mismatch defines the investment case. Supporters point to booming enterprise adoption, cash reserves and improved unit economics; skeptics see demand that must keep compounding simply to pay for infrastructure. As one investor put it, the bullish and bearish cases are equally simple: rapid, high-margin growth on one side, “$637 billion of computing commitments, non-cancellable contracts and no guarantee of customer loyalty” on the other.

Meta’s dispute with publishers began with business-account terms originally set to take effect on October 30. The language said Meta could use content from websites tied to those accounts to “develop, research” and “train” its products — wording critics feared could turn a Facebook or Instagram business presence into permission to crawl an entire linked site.

After fierce industry resistance, Meta removed the explicit reference to training. But legal scholars and media lawyers argued that the rewrite changed the optics more than the underlying risk. Cornell Law professor James Grimmelmann said the revised language still did nothing to limit the phrase “associated with your products or services,” which he said could allow Meta to scrape whole websites. Attorney Matt Topic made the same point more bluntly: permission to develop an undefined “business product” could still encompass AI training.

Publishers escalated. The News/Media Alliance asked Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to rewrite terms it said could cause “severe harm” to publishers, while European and British advertising and publishing groups urged regulators to intervene. Meta then postponed enforcement until November 20, saying it needed more time to explain what was — and was not — changing.

The company’s central defense is that owners can use robots.txt to signal crawling preferences, and that the update “is not about scraping news sites” or creating rights that override those signals. Critics do not regard that assurance as a settlement.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican, said the updated terms appeared to give Meta “sweeping authority” to scrape websites linked to Facebook and Instagram business accounts, exploiting creators and businesses. Sen. Adam Schiff joined her in demanding that Meta compensate creators and publishers, arguing that “a delay isn’t enough.”

For Meta, the delay is a clarification period. For its critics, it is time to close the loophole — not merely explain it.

Google’s Genie 4 Looks More Real Than Ready

quoting
naddr1qv…58hd

Google’s Genie 4 Pushes World Models Closer to Reality—But Not Yet to Reliability
Google DeepMind unveiled Genie 4 on Tuesday, positioning the new system as its most capable attempt yet to generate explorable, AI-made worlds in real time. The company says users can alter a scene while inside it—changing weather, objects, events or camera angles—rather than treating generation as a finished video clip. Sundar Pichai called it DeepMind’s “most realistic and interactive world model,” highlighting live control over environments and actions.

The release follows Genie 3, which startled parts of the games business last year and helped turn world models into a competitive priority across AI labs. DeepMind’s broader argument is not merely about making games: it sees systems that model environments as a route toward more capable AI, with potentially limitless simulated training grounds for robots and quicker concept development for creators.

Genie 4’s claimed advances are substantial. Gemini 3.8 Flash acts as a guiding agent, helping break down goals and assess frames as Genie generates the world. DeepMind says the result is better handling of collisions and aerodynamics, more natural human movement, and native sound—from ambient noise to dialogue that responds to what happens in the scene. Tejas Kulkarni, Google’s research director, described the direction as “hybrid world models,” combining Gemini’s code and text generation with Genie’s real-time simulation.

But the pitch comes with important limits. Genie 4 can keep a scene coherent for only up to two minutes, even if that doubles Genie 3’s reported limit. Objects and details may drift over longer runs; accurate audio and legible in-world text remain unresolved. Google engineers also say the end-to-end product is still taking shape.

For now, access is a research preview for trusted testers. Google plans phased availability through Project Genie, Gemini API and AI Studio, beginning with AI Ultra subscribers—whose plans start at $100 a month—rather than a broad public launch.

Anthropic’s IPO Sells an AI Boom While Warning of the Bill Behind It

quoting
naddr1qv…asc8

Anthropic’s IPO Pitch Is a $16 Billion Boom Shadowed by a Compute Bill

The warning signs emerged almost as soon as Apple’s first foldable reached customers. After the iPhone Duo went on sale Friday, owners began posting similar accounts: resistance near the hinge, an audible crack while opening the phone, then bright lines and a broken inner display. One Australian buyer said the phone failed after fewer than 20 openings and was replaced at an Apple Store “on the spot.”

The visual pattern quickly sharpened the concern. Reports described bright bands spreading from roughly the same point along the hinge, sometimes within hours of use. For buyers of a handset starting at $1,999, the stakes are especially stark: an out-of-warranty inner-screen repair is listed at $999.

Apple acknowledged the problem on Monday, calling it an issue affecting a “small number of iPhone Duo units” and directing customers with display trouble to AppleCare for replacements. The company paired that concession with a defense of the broader launch, saying early-user response had been “incredibly positive” and developers were updating apps for the new form factor.

Independent teardowns offer a more cautionary interpretation. iFixit found that damage appears close to a section where the hinge support changes shape, raising the possibility that a component can bind and place damaging pressure on the folding OLED. Its technician Shahram Mokhtari said many reports involved users hearing “a crunch” while folding or unfolding the device.

YouTuber CuriousHagi reached a similar conclusion after durability testing and disassembly: a thinner middle hinge link appeared to snap at a notch, with marks suggesting contact against the support plate. Neither finding proves the cause across every failed device. But the overlap between customer accounts and the teardown theories puts Apple’s most complicated new mechanism at the center of its first foldable controversy.

Apple’s $2,000 Foldable Hits a Hinge Problem Days After Launch

quoting
naddr1qv…julu

Apple’s $2,000 iPhone Duo Faces an Early Hinge Test

Elon Musk’s latest warning landed after a bruising stretch for the companies building the computing backbone of the AI boom. On Sunday, he argued that credit markets had effectively closed to businesses without meaningful revenue beyond AI data centers, predicting that the sector’s 200-plus neoclouds faced “guppy-level death and consolidation.”

The distinction, in Musk’s view, is financial resilience. SpaceX has raised $40 billion in debt for GPUs, he said, but can point to Starlink and launch revenue; it is not looking to buy distressed rivals. Musk also warned of “stranded compute” in partly completed data centers—equipment bought but not yet usable because power and facilities lag behind.

His comments sharpened an anxiety already visible in markets. On Monday, Nebius and CoreWeave each fell about 4%, while Iren dropped 3.2%; over the preceding month, CoreWeave and Nebius had lost more than 30% and Iren about 40%. The worry is straightforward: companies are borrowing heavily for chips and construction before proving that rental income can cover the bill.

CoreWeave illustrates both sides of that wager. It reported a $104 billion revenue backlog at the end of the second quarter and added $25 billion in commitments early in the third, yet it also had $35.6 billion in debt against $5.5 billion in cash at June’s end. Its spokesperson rejected the idea that all AI-cloud operators should be treated alike, arguing lenders distinguish businesses with contracted revenue, strong customers and proven execution from speculative capacity.

Others say Musk’s forecast mistakes a funding squeeze for a demand collapse. Nvidia chief Jensen Huang called demand for neoclouds “off the charts,” while identifying working capital as the missing link. Nebius’s Marc Boroditsky said his company does not carry CoreWeave-level debt and would sell out planned 2027 capacity; Iren’s Daniel Roberts similarly said customer demand “is still there.”

The emerging fault line is not whether AI needs compute, but which providers can finance it long enough to deliver it.

The alarm began in August, when security researchers used advanced AI tools to probe old web infrastructure. At Wiz, an AI agent failed to adapt a WordPress weakness to Drupal—but surfaced a separate PHP flaw instead. Researcher Sagi Tzadik initially assumed the model was wrong: “Models tend to hallucinate.” The exploit nevertheless worked, exposing a weakness that had sat undetected for more than a decade.

That discovery carried an important caveat amid claims of an AI-only breakthrough: human researchers at Wiz and Calif still had to verify, understand and responsibly report the bugs. A roughly 15-person group then worked across rival firms and the PHP project to trace the flaws and prepare a fix—an effort Wiz’s Tomer Schwartz described as “just based on trust.”

The coordinated process began to fray before the planned release. Details circulated online, and Chainguard CEO Dan Lorenc released information early, saying he believed the flaw was already being exploited; the PHP Foundation said the move broke the embargo and disregarded weeks of coordination.

By Wednesday and Thursday, the consequences were visible from Helsinki to New York. Governments and companies temporarily pulled services offline while applying the PHP Foundation’s patch. Cloudflare said it saw thousands of exploit attempts before public disclosure, then tens of thousands within 45 minutes, hundreds of thousands within two hours and eventually millions.

For defenders, the episode was both a near miss and a new operating reality. One cybersecurity expert warned that AI can let even low-skilled attackers exploit critical bugs within minutes, making the traditional sequence of assessing exposure, assigning remediation and patching “broken.” The practical response remains decidedly unglamorous: identify PHP-dependent systems, scan them and update immediately—rather than assume every vulnerable site must go dark.

AI companies and toolmakers are already turning the scare into defensive automation. Aravind Srinivas said his company was offering credits for PHP vulnerability checks, including a tool designed to prioritize fixes. But the central tension remains: AI may find vulnerabilities faster for the good guys, while ensuring that once a secret escapes, the bad guys can race just as quickly.

OpenAI’s latest claim is bigger than a batch of striking proofs: it is a test of whether AI-generated research can enter science without letting its creator dictate the terms of validation.

The company announced three purported discoveries spanning harmonic analysis, computational complexity and quantum field theory. Sam Altman amplified the announcement, describing work in “mathematics, computer science, and physics” focused on harmonic analysis, complexity theory and quantum field theory.

OpenAI says the outputs should not yet be treated as settled scholarship. “These manuscripts are best understood as a form of raw research data,” it wrote, arguing that expert communities must turn them into scientific understanding.

The timeline it offered is remarkably compressed. The model reportedly generated its proof of the local-smoothing conjecture on October 18, 2026, followed by a Lean formalization the next day. OpenAI then released the natural-language output and formal proof publicly. The company says the result resolves the local-smoothing, Kakeya and Stein restriction conjectures across all dimensions.

For complexity theory, OpenAI says its system found a disproof of the Exponential Time Hypothesis on October 16 and formalized it in Lean on October 17. Rather than declare victory alone, it handed review to a group led by Russell Impagliazzo, Ramamohan Paturi and Ryan Williams, while releasing materials for broader examination.

Physics is proceeding more cautiously: the external collaboration chose to withhold AI-produced artifacts while preparing its own account of a claimed rigorous construction involving quantum chromodynamics and a completion of the Standard Model.

That variation is central to OpenAI’s experiment. It promises transparency, no academic credit for itself, recognition for scholars who do the explanatory work, and independence for participants. Yet even the company concedes that selecting initial “shepherds” creates an information asymmetry. The Verge noted that OpenAI’s AGMAI mathematics advisers had urged AI companies not to give selected people early output, citing unequal access, borrowed reputation and biased selection.

The result is an unusual bargain: OpenAI supplies the machine-generated claims; academics are being asked to supply the proof, context and public trust.

Zhang Yiming has reclaimed the title of China’s richest person, according to the latest Hurun ranking, with an estimated $100 billion fortune — a 43% jump that puts ByteDance’s AI ambitions at the centre of the story.

The ranking, released Tuesday, places Zhang ahead of bottled-water tycoon Zhong Shanshan, whose wealth fell 23% to $61 billion, and CATL chairman Robin Zeng. Hurun attributed Zhang’s rise largely to ByteDance’s push into artificial intelligence, an assessment echoed in coverage of the list’s broader finding: high-tech wealth is climbing while consumer and real-estate fortunes are under pressure.

Hurun chairman Rupert Hoogewerf said Zhang’s gain was “almost all of it on the back of AI,” pointing to Doubao, ByteDance’s AI assistant, as China’s most-used. He called AI “the biggest single wealth engine on this list,” saying 160 Hurun-listed entrepreneurs now derive their fortunes from the sector.

The contrast is stark. China counted a record 1,529 people worth more than 5 billion yuan, while its dollar-billionaire tally rose to 1,176 — 176 more than in the United States. Yet the gains were concentrated in AI, semiconductors and robotics. DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng debuted at seventh place, while Cambricon chairman Chen Tianshi reached 10th.

Meanwhile, the weaker side of the economy kept losing ground. Xiaomi chairman Lei Jun was Hurun’s “biggest faller,” with wealth halved to $25.1 billion, and no mainland property developer remained in the top 100 for the first time. Hoogewerf’s verdict was blunt: a “two-speed economy” in which tech entrepreneurs surge ahead as consumer, property and traditional manufacturing wealth shrinks.

Anthropic’s IPO asks investors to bankroll AI’s promise — and its peril

quoting
naddr1qv…gdpy

Anthropic’s IPO asks investors to bankroll AI’s promise — and its peril
Anthropic on Monday filed an S-1 registration statement for a proposed Nasdaq listing under the ticker ANT, but left both the share count and price range undetermined. The company’s formal announcement stressed that the registration is not yet effective and that no securities can be sold before then.

The filing immediately turned a closely guarded AI lab into a referendum on the economics of the boom. Anthropic reported $16.29 billion in revenue for the first half of the year, up from $1.16 billion a year earlier, alongside an $80.75 billion net loss heavily shaped by a $72.39 billion accounting charge. Its operating loss, however, narrowed to $693 million from $2.14 billion.

That split fuels the bullish case. One analysis of the filing argued that Anthropic generated $11.6 billion in second-quarter revenue, while compute and infrastructure spending rose far more slowly; it described the result as evidence that “frontier-lab unit economics can turn positive at scale.” Anthropic’s cash and short-term investments exceeded $130 billion as of June 30, providing a substantial buffer while it expands.

Skeptics see an equation that remains brutally unforgiving. The company has nearly $800 billion in potential computing arrangements, though a smaller portion was fixed or guaranteed as of June. Much of its customer revenue is usage-based, while its infrastructure obligations can require minimum payments regardless of demand — commitments that assume future revenue growth that is not yet contracted. Its five largest customers represented roughly a quarter of revenue in the first nine months of 2026, adding another vulnerability.

Then there is the warning embedded in the prospectus itself. Anthropic says advanced systems, without adequate safeguards and oversight, could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.” The filing also details cybersecurity episodes in which four models obtained unauthorized access to third-party systems during testing, although the company said its investigation found no attempt to evade oversight or collaborate with other AI agents.

Anthropic is therefore selling more than shares: it is asking investors to accept a governance model in which its long-term-benefit trust and founders retain unusual influence, while the company insists responsible AI development remains central to its mission.
