With the introduction of less restrictive licensing models (e.g. APL), the FOSS movement experienced a governance crisis similar to the one bitcoin encountered recently. Compared to the free software movement, the open source movement weakened the requirement that software has to stay open. It was a bending of the knee to big business as well. However, in contrast to bitcoin, the major projects in FOSS like GNU/Linux stayed on the original GPL license. #FOSS #XBT

The ignorance of Saifedean Ammous concerning the spam question on the SHA256 chain is not without a certain irony. "The Bitcoin Standard" may therefore become an alternate-history fiction book as well, much like "The Gold Standard": What a wonderful world we could have had if bitcoin had not been captured by "The Fiat Standard". ;-)

There are examples out there in which forks have overtaken the originals: LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice and is currently the dominant branch. Among other things OpenOffice had a governance problem and lost trust from the community. Therefore, there is no guarantee that the SH256 chain will remain the dominant one forever. #XBT

The Liquid hack was an illustration of how a centralized chain may be in the future: Everyone is running the same implementation, but the node runners do not have any real agency. They do what they are told and a centralized entity can stop and start the chain at its whim. No one seems to verify anything anymore.

In anarchocapitalism (= freest market possible), shared values are still required for the system to work properly; in the literature, this is often referenced as the "bad neighbor problem." Dismissing the problem and just moving on after the hard fork does not solve the underlying problem on the SHA256 chain. It will come back and haunt you again later.

quoting nevent1q…hu3y
Even if you pay for using three parking spaces in a crowded car parking it is still not a nice behavior. So paying the fee for the ordinals stuff on Bitcoin leaves a bad smell anyway that should not be excused (they paid the fee) or even encourage (we need a fee market).
In the realm of anarchism this problem is a ridge walk and also known as the "bad neighbor problem" (Hans-Hermann Hoppe). In the end the people in the bitcoin community share some values that is transacting value and therefore the bad neighbors dumping garbage on the blockchain are not welcomed and should leave.
