I think that there are enough resources for everyone to live a fulfilling life, yes, but not enough for all of us to get all that we want.

My dependence is no less worthy than yours, but neither of us 'suffer' enough. I really get cross with airlines. To get on or off a plane, I have to be picked up by my arms and legs and lifted first onto an 'evac chair' then onto a seat that does not adequately support me. They can get hundreds of tonnes of metal into the air, but that is how they get a disabled person onto a plane!? Really though, none of us should be jetting off for a week swanning around Barcelona.

I'm probably going to stop here, although I am enjoying the exchange. It is more complicated than I realised when I posted. In short, I like the fact that I have to be brought up against my own dependence on others. I think that if everybody was, we would see the horror of how we live and live better.

One more story. I was once stranded over night in Paris because they SNCF people refused to come to the platform to put me on the last train because I hadn't been to their office 40 minutes in advance of the departure. Everyone was very upset, except my housemate. He could not understand the fuss. He'd crossed the med at 13 without papers and then mostly walked across France and Italy to the UK. He arrived at 14. He was more surprised that I took it for granted that you could get on a train in France. Now of course, everyone should be able to travel, but that world is one in which people like me get a lot less of what I want, but perhaps a lot more of what I need, beauty, truth, friendship, community and power. It is the last that is true autonomy, working with others to achieve something of value together.

I want a world in which we have power, that is to say, the ability to do something. You can only do something by working with others. Unless you are prepared and capable of putting a gun to their heads, what you do won't get you what you want. It involves compromise, sharing, finding something that you and me and him and her and they can agree upon. That's OK most of my wants are illegitimate. That is why the planet is burning. Something like that.

yes absolutely, but I will tell you what got me started on this train of thought. I once went to a squat in London. It, the squat, didn't last very long. They don't anymore. The wonderful people of the squat had put in loads of work to change the front step to a ramp, digging out concrete, rehanging the door, I don't know what else. Serious labour and resources. They could have done other things with their time, limited money and limited muscle power. Had they just knocked up a ramp out of an old table, I could have got in. I could have also got in had they tipped back my heavy wheelchair. These are all adjustments. Why did they go for the ramp? Because they thought that anything that involved a disabled person having to talk to another human being wasn't access, because it would make me dependent on someone else. I am already dependent on other people, just like every human being.

I really appreciate the fact that my life makes my dependence so transparent. It is the actual human condition and one that capitalism tries to deny, usually at enormous cost to people and planet.

I stand by it, by and large, although the pushback from two different people was edifying. I don't think that disabled people should have to sort out access for ourselves by ourselves. I do think that the idea that access is anything other than a collective responsibility that requires effort from both the disabled person and their community is an offensive, capitalist idea. It is one that either strips me of all my agency or turns me into a tyrant.
