I like much of John Briquelet's RPG work. He did a few very good Tunnels & Trolls supplements, later converted and expanded for Monsters! Monsters! after T&T was kiboshed, and as you can see from this snippet he's very good at giving full and proper credit. I think in his more recent work he's also moved away from using AI entirely, so perhaps it's unfair to pick on this piece, but that qualification about the chosen prompts avoiding copyright infringement is just the sort of thing I have a problem with when dealing with people's AI adoption (Would capitulation be a better word?). The entire engine is constructed from stolen data, so good intentions don't particularly help when it comes to using it.

Unfortunately, Steve Crompton and Ken St. Andre, who publish these supplements through Trollgodfather Press, are considerably keener on using AI and don't make it clear where and how they do, so I find myself unable to trust anything from that publisher. What's the point of a creative business where creativity is outsourced to a machine?

“Monster’s Apprentice” magazine is an instant shot of nostalgia for me, as I’m sure was the intention. Copies of every “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” are on the shelf about a metre from my elbow at the moment, my favourite gaming magazine alongside “Spaced Gamer”. I don’t think either has been matched, but of course these days it would be impossible to produce that sort of magazine, unless it had a large fund of money to draw on and no need to turn a profit. After all, even in the eighties RPG magazines were money and time sinks for their publishers, few achieving profitability or lasting for long.

Sadly, reading MA is a little melancholy. I’m pleased that the some of the old FBI crew were able to put it together, but in many ways it’s a reminder that we no longer have T&T, M!M! is a line of erratic quality and a great deal of AI, and too many old gamers are gone.

The first issue (possibly the only one planned, I’m not sure) of “Monster’s Apprentice” magazine is now on DriveThruRPG.com. It was an extra made available with a recent “Monsters! Monsters!” Kickstarter; unlike the rest of the offerings, AI was not used in the writing or illustration, so I backed the magazine and not the rest of it.

Only just started reading, but they certainly caught the general look and feel of the old “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” mags, although it’s impossible to get the full experience without all the ads that used to fill up the spaces in magazines of the time.

Fiction by Lord Dunsany (I thought he’d have retired by now…); GM and solo adventures; an interview with Rob Carver, who sadly died before publication; a brief history of Flying Buffalo Inc. and Rick Loomis; lots of articles; and a new monster by Stefan Edward Jones (npub1wzv…wqmy) of this parish. All in all, it looks very promising.

It's interesting how many of the supposedly integrated classic campaigns for Cthulhu actually have a point where it becomes extremely hard for the investigators to justify continuing, as they have no logical connection to what happens next. Too many adventures writers relying on the "we do it because we're playing a game, so if we don't do it we can't play" mentality.

I did find this fascinating article about dip pens, but it doesn't quite answer the question although it does seem to confirm my thought that travelling / pocket inkwells were more about being carried from place to place rather than pulled out and used throughout the day:

Sheet music is a good example of why the rules on copyright could do with a serious revamp. I'm looking for a piece from nearly a century ago, but can't find it in any of the online academic collections I have access to. It doesn't seem to have been offered for sale on eBay recently, if at all, and I can't find it in stock at the few vintage sheet music sellers I know.

And I can't pay for a copy, because even though it's been out of print for decades, nobody appears to offer it online. There are thousands of amazing tunes out there in the same position, disappearing from our memory and culture, and we're all poorer for it.

I picked up an East Top chromatic harmonica a little while ago. Not a brand I knew, but with my old Hohner diatonics somewhere in storage I thought I'd try something cheap for a lark. On the whole it's surprisingly decent, certainly for the price. I doubt it will last as well as my old harps (and there is one very small irregularity in the finish I need to file, as I can feel it rubbing the side of my mouth) but it does seem as though there are better cheap instruments available than there used to be.

I was just listening to Equinoxe Infinity, which I think does a great job of continuing themes and employing textures from the original Equinoxe album without feeling constrained by its predecessor. In some respects his first two mainstream albums—Oxygène and Equinoxe—are hard to beat and sound so weirdly organic. Honestly, I don't know if I can pick only one, but I am very fond of Zoolook.

I'm afraid I've no experience of it on a Mac, but generally you can go to your Amazon account on a browser and find your Kindle titles under devices and content, then choose the download option for each book. This may not work if you don't have a physical Kindle ereader registered.
