I'd need to see if I still have some Australian stats but from memory talk stations like ABC Brisbane had a far smaller time spent listening than music stations like MMM. I suspect some of this was the difference between people just turning on to hear some news, compared to people who might leave it on as background music across the day.

As part of a previous job, I travelled to many of these remote places and, as a result, listened to much of the on-air content. Many of them are far smaller than Mt Newman, and according to their license, a single FM frequency is supposed to rebroadcast the local ABC radio station for that region.

What I found was something very different and depended mostly on the person designated to run the operation. Apart from re-broadcasting whatever they could pull off the satellite, I remember one location that played their latest Country Music CD between 8am and 9am.
