One fun thing to do in Richmond is to go to the Edgar Allen Poe museum in Richmond, which is as much a monument to a collective act of an obsessive fan subculture as it is of Poe himself, and remember that the Poe "shrine" was being built and the museum's extensive collection assembled around the same time that the monuments were being put in.

I think my fundamental inability to get on board with this centers on the term "AI." I've said before I think 20's equivalent of "information superhighway." It's a marketing term that's starting to get treated as a serious descriptor.

Image categorization by machine learning is a very different technology than "agentic" LLMs, with an entirely different set of concerns, but flattening them both into "AI" is part of why our current discourse about this is so confused.

I'm not against machine learning at all. I'm not even against language models, even a little bit. I'm against using those in "generative" and "agentic" ways that I think are fundamentally broken and very difficult to amend. You have a promising "AI" in mind but that could mean many things. If it's more "generative" and "agentic" uses, I'm against it. If it's something else, I'm interested.

Fantastic. I've been watching sodium ion batteries for the past couple of years as an essential step forward in battery storage.

Lithium is terrific for small batteries but rare and damaging to mine, so getting enough for grid-scale batteries was always problematic. Sodium, to put it mildly, is neither.

Portable electronics batteries and probably car batteries will continue to be lithium for the foreseeable future but it's a huge step forward to have grid scale electricity in volume using sodium.

For the past 3-4 months, it's been giving increasingly erratic results, ones that we have difficulty verifying because it involves vulnerability detections on things we don't have access to.

I have a close family friend, who even now in retirement and with an aggressive cancer to manage, continues to produce truly field-changing reproductive scientific papers.

Almost all of them go back to a data set he collected in the late 70s.

This whole thing reminds me of a friend in high school trying to convince me to read a Heinlein novel. He said it was fascinating in that it started with the premise that "the eugenics experiments worked" and went from there.
