even worse, for many people, living in cities, the air in their homes is not actually safe. It is a very low rate of covid sneaking through, but it is enough that keeping people home never broke the chain of transmission. UV or HEPA running constantly in city homes especially high rises and the like might be enough to break that chain. in the world today, unfortunately, you walk into a space with HEPA or UV and talk to somebody who has Covid for a few seconds maybe a minute depending on where they are in the cycle, and you get Covid. Without the air cleaning it might have taken a second or 4 less. It can clean the air after everyone else has left so you can unmask. The last time I read a paper on the UV option at the legal maximum for exposure, it takes maybe 16 minutes to kill 95% of the virus in the air. This is still useful for sanitizing private air for unmasking, but it would need to actually deliver N95 quality filtration in under a second to handle a conversation with a sick person. while I am sure there could be a better mask, the N99 I wear is pretty comfortable. Cleaning the air will never directly deal with Covid though. Short range interaction with people is the largest transmission source, indoors and out, because of the intensity of the aerosols so close to the source a partial second away, while air cleaning takes 15 minutes. This needs a reevaluation. Public health’s assumptions were too few and inappropriate masks worn wrong, with the implicit idea that you will get covid but hopefully transmit to fewer people, keeping the hospitals from overflowing. That is no longer the situation. The appropriate mask for your exposure can perfectly block covid. And a valve makes that mask last longer (less water in the mask), transmit your voice better, and overall more wearable. 1 Another concerned scientist (npub1pgh…5g4d)
